...But as a climate reporter, Ive started to think about an added season of the year. The effects of climate change are felt year-round, but theres a heightened set of months when it seems to become omnipresent and un-ignorable. It is the Bad Season. And we are right in the middle of it.
...The Bad Season means millions of people staying inside on what could be one of the most brilliant weekends of the year. But it also means that this American scorcher comes on the heels of a record-breaking heatwave in western Europe, where France recorded temperatures above 113 degrees Fahrenheit (or 45 degrees Celsius) for the first time ever. It means summertime forest fires in California are eight times larger now than they were in the early 1970s. It means Chennai, a city of 10 million, is nearly out of water. It means even Arctic ice at the far north of Greenland turns to slush unnavigable by sled dog.
This is the Bad Season. It means that a heat wave is never just a heat wave, but a symptom of a larger problem and a warning about whats to come.

(9,287 posts)They have tried to destroy the science and deny reality. I hope people remember this in the years to come. Like hatracks sig line says belief in climate change is optional but participation will be mandatory.
