Lithium mining for 'green' electric cars is leaving a stain on the planet

source: alternet

In 2018, the International Energy Agency (IEA) made a prediction that had the potential to disrupt the auto industry: by 2030, there would be nearly 125 million electric vehicles owned by people around the world, they said. That was a significant increase compared to the 3.1 million electric vehicles globally owned in 2017.

I don’t doubt lithium mines make a mess. So do coal mines, and so does oil drilling.

With the exception of those pure and noble souls who prefer to walk or cycle and coincidentally live near their destinations, many individuals and businesses will use vehicles. The choice is between filthy air in such places as greater Los Angeles, Denver, and Mexico City or something electric.

I. Can’t. Breathe. Doesn’t just apply to rogue policemen’s choke-holds.

I don't think the author wants to therefore junk electric cars, she just wanted to remind us that there is always some consequence for using technology.
