Not to be overly dramatic, but in terms of lung destruction, all it actually takes is inhaling the wrong particle. Even well conditioned athletes shouldn't be competing in this air.

"It's not healthy for us. I was surprised, I thought we would not be playing today but we don't have much choice," she said.
It comes amid concerns over the air quality in Melbourne, with organisers earlier postponing the start of play by an hour, after the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) rated conditions as hazardous.

(7,572 posts)I can't believe they expect the athletes to compete in these conditions. It should be moved or canceled. I know that really messes up the year's tennis schedule, but these conditions should have been realized weeks ago. The players' health has to come first, not the money.
