That's Nice: Facebook "Ramping Up" Efforts To Block Climate Lies, With "Informational Labels"

Facebook says it is stepping up efforts to dispute myths and misinformation about climate change, including adding labels to some posts.

The social network hosts a Climate Science Information Center, which will now feature a section debunking common myths about climate change, such as the impact of carbon dioxide in the air, the company said Thursday. Facebook will also add "informational labels" to some climate-related posts in the United Kingdom linking back to the center. That feature will become available in more countries soon.

Facebook is also expanding access to the center to more countries, including Brazil, Mexico and South Africa. It's already available in France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the U.S.

Climate change is among several topics where Facebook has moved to curb the spread of false information on its platform. The company started taking down misinformation on Facebook and Instagram related to COVID-19 vaccines earlier this month.

The study, by Bu Zhong and Marie Hardin at Penn State and Tao Sun at the University of Vermont, is one of the first to examine the personalities of social networkers. The researchers looked in particular at connections between social-network use and the personality trait that psychologists refer to as “need for cognition,” or NFC. NFC, as Professor Zhong explained in an email to me, “is a recognized indicator for deep or shallow thinking.” People who like to challenge their minds have high NFC, while those who avoid deep thinking have low NFC. Whereas, according to the authors, “high NFC individuals possess an intrinsic motivation to think, having a natural motivation to seek knowledge,” those with low NFC don’t like to grapple with complexity and tend to content themselves with superficial assessments, particularly when faced with difficult intellectual challenges.

Less effortful thinking leads to more social networking? The associations between the use of social network sites and personality traits

I tend to agree. I dislike all forms of socializing - effortful in unpleasant ways. I will keep a DU account as long as EarlG and Elad remain. But I am paring even this back significantly.

I am not surprised that the leadership at Facebook generally comes off as empty-headed, shallow, superficial and fairly stupid. I can't say I am never shallow or stupid, but I am ashamed of it when I am and conceal it.

Now we live in world of Kardashians. Everybody is a celebrity. What was a noxious enough thing back in the day is now everywhere.

It fits with the generally apocalyptic feel of these times that these shallow and stupid creeps are the leaders of tech.

Don't worry so much about climate change hatrack. I am sure there is an app for it. Just hand over your backyard to to creepy surveillance firms and somehow destroying your privacy will save the environment. Don't ask how...they don't like being pinned down to explanations.

More chaos? More bullshit industries...how dare you take people's jobs away?!11!!!
