Alaska Airlines rolls out strategy to slash carbon emissions by 2040

Alaska Airlines unveiled a blueprint Wednesday under which the SeaTac-based carrier aims to slash carbon emissions and waste by 2040 as part of companywide environmental, social and corporate governance goals.

The airline group's strategy includes a mix of short- and medium-term targets, Diana Birkett Rakow, Alaska's vice president of public affairs and sustainability, said in an interview with the Business Journal.

"We're on a journey. We're not there yet," she said.

The goals include buying new all-electric ground and baggage-handling equipment, with the goal to cut ground equipment emissions 50% by 2025, and linking bonus pay for its 22,000 workers to its carbon reduction efforts.
