Torrential rain lashes central China, 21 dead; Japan: more than a million told to seek shelter
At least 21 people died as heavy downpours struck central Chinas Hubei province, authorities said today, weeks after record floods wreaked havoc and killed hundreds in a neighbouring province.

In Hubei, torrential rains caused power cuts and landslides, destroying hundreds of homes and forcing the evacuation of nearly 6,000 people, the provinces Emergency Management Bureau said on Friday, as reservoirs reach dangerous levels.

Footage showed families wading in water that had risen to almost hip level and carrying essentials in plastic bags in Yicheng, which saw a record 480 mm (around 19 inches) of rain on Thursday. Rescuers carried people to safety on bulldozers.
Yesterday the water levels rose to about two to three metres my neighbours house was completely destroyed, a resident from one of the worst affected areas in the city of Suizhou told local media.

More than one million people have been told to evacuate their homes amid heavy rainfall in parts of Japan.
Highest-level rain warnings have been issued in a number of prefectures, including Fukuoka and Hiroshima.

Yushi Adachi, from Japan's meteorological agency, described the current rainfall as "unprecedented".
"It's highly likely that some kind of disaster has already occurred," Mr Adachi added.

Turkey floods: Death toll near Black Sea rises to 31
A huge search and rescue operation is under way in northern Turkey after flash floods along the Black Sea coast killed at least 31 people.

Floods, triggered by torrential rain, caused some buildings to collapse, smashed bridges, clogged streets with wrecked cars and cut power supplies.
This month Turkey has also had to battle huge wildfires in the south.
Those fires - which are now under control - forced thousands of locals and tourists to flee Marmaris and surrounding areas. Eight people died and more than 100,000 hectares (247,000 acres) of vegetation was devastated.
