Torrential rain lashes central China, 21 dead; Japan: more than a million told to seek shelter

At least 21 people died as heavy downpours struck central China’s Hubei province, authorities said today, weeks after record floods wreaked havoc and killed hundreds in a neighbouring province.
...
In Hubei, torrential rains caused power cuts and landslides, destroying hundreds of homes and forcing the evacuation of nearly 6,000 people, the province’s Emergency Management Bureau said on Friday, as reservoirs reach dangerous levels.
...
Footage showed families wading in water that had risen to almost hip level and carrying essentials in plastic bags in Yicheng, which saw a record 480 mm (around 19 inches) of rain on Thursday. Rescuers carried people to safety on bulldozers.

“Yesterday the water levels rose to about two to three metres – my neighbour’s house was completely destroyed,” a resident from one of the worst affected areas in the city of Suizhou told local media.

Turkey floods: Death toll near Black Sea rises to 31

A huge search and rescue operation is under way in northern Turkey after flash floods along the Black Sea coast killed at least 31 people.
...
Floods, triggered by torrential rain, caused some buildings to collapse, smashed bridges, clogged streets with wrecked cars and cut power supplies.

This month Turkey has also had to battle huge wildfires in the south.

Those fires - which are now under control - forced thousands of locals and tourists to flee Marmaris and surrounding areas. Eight people died and more than 100,000 hectares (247,000 acres) of vegetation was devastated.
