(Reuters) - The Biden administration has an ambitious $7.5 billion plan to expand electric vehicle charging to underserved areas, but it must first overcome a host of obstacles that have discouraged private investment in more equitable charging networks.
The experience of California - the U.S. state with the largest number of EVs and the most advanced charging infrastructure - shows how challenging it will be to achieve the goals in the $1 trillion infrastructure spending proposal Biden wants Congress to pass.
California has poured more than $2 billion into a variety of EV incentive programs over the last years, which include policies to promote equity in distribution of chargers. The state has also generated more than $25 billion through its carbon credits trading program since 2012, a portion of which goes toward EV and charging projects.
Nevertheless, California currently has less than 40% of the charging infrastructure needed to support projected EV growth by 2025, according to a U.S.-wide charging gap study by the International Council on Clean Transportation.

(53,726 posts)as I'm considering an EV for my next car? Seems the change to EVs presents many problem. Gas stations get cars in and out if a few minutes. Will it ever get to that with EVs?

...happy, the State just approved 5 new dangerous natural gas "temporary" plants to deal with "temporary" drought for the "renewable" hydroelectricity and "temporary" but regular instances of DunkelFlaute.
California Will Add Gas-Fired Units to Increase Power Supply
The dangerous fossil fuel waste created by using these plants, carbon dioxide, indiscriminately dumped without restriction, will not, however, "temporarily" be in the planet's atmosphere, and the damage done by fracking the hell out of the earth to get the last drop of gas to fuel these "temporary" plants will not only temporarily exist. Au contrare, the damage done for these "temporary" plants will be with humanity forever.
They'll probably need more "temporary" plants in 2026 after Diablo Canyon shuts as part of the international festival celebrating fear, ignorance and climate change.
Electric cars are not sustainable, nor are they clean and "green."
