Amazon, Alaska Airlines join effort to lower aircraft emissions

Two top Seattle airplane operators have made commitments to invest in technologies that will reduce the carbon impact of their flights.

At the COP26 U.N climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland, this week, Alaska Air Group and Amazon Air joined United Airlines and JetBlue in signing on to the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance, forming a new group of aviation industry representatives that aims to spur investment in low-carbon fuels.

Key among those efforts will be increasing production of sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF.

While SAF is a “critical” part of its net-zero strategy, “production and supply are not yet where our industry needs them to be,” Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci said in a news release. “That’s why it’s critical we work together to build a robust market for SAF.”
