'Huge Win for Gray Wolves' as US Court Restores Endangered Species Act Protections

Campaigners also emphasize that, as one expert put it, "there is still a huge amount of work ahead to protect wolves in Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming, where they face some of their biggest threats."

While celebrating a U.S. judge's Thursday decision to restore federal protections that the Trump administration had stripped from the gray wolf, wildlife advocates and experts also demanded action to save wolves that won't be protected by the legal triumph.

Calling the ruling "a significant victory for gray wolves and for all those who value nature and the public's role in protecting these amazing creatures," Defenders of Wildlife CEO and president Jamie Rappaport Clark said the restoration "means that these vitally important animals will receive the necessary support to recover and thrive in the years ahead."

Collette Adkins, carnivore conservation director at the Center for Biological Diversity, similarly declared that "this is a huge win for gray wolves and the many people across the country who care so deeply about them."

"I'm relieved that the court set things right but saddened that hundreds of wolves suffered and died under this illegal delisting rule," she said, warning that "it will take years to undo the damage done to wolf populations."

Thanks for this thread, Judi.

Seeing one of these handsome beast in the wild would take my breath away. I respect and adore them.

P.S. When we visit our mountain lot down in the Smokies, we often see black bear within yards of us. Can only imagine seeing a wolf.
Our neighbors email pics of their bear sightings, as if they're trying to win a prize for the most bear pics. Can only imagine what'd happen if a wolf showed up but they were hunted to extinction many decades ago down there.

There's a website near Salem, New York, which raises wild wolves in a large area, to keep their wards safe and to raise future wolves to return them to the wild. They do not domesticate them. They do have three "ambassador wolves" which are tamer and are used for visits to schools, etc., Nikai, sibling Alawa, and dark wolf, also a sibling, Zephyr. Zephry was born in a different litter, as he isn't the same age. He's their sibling, anyway.

The website live cams, all 8 of them are in service around the clock, even during holidays. At times the cameras go dark, mechanical troubles, probably, but are re-activated in good time.

I understand Martha Stewart's daughter has done volunteer work at the New York Wolf conservation center.

https://nywolf.org/meet-our-wolves/webcams/

They have educational tours periodically at the center. I have used my link to the website daily, usually, and bought calenders each year, as a small contribution. Each exhibit has an outdoor view of some of their area, and an indoor camera, for sleepy wolves! They seem to love winter most, and seem happy as clams sleeping on thick snow, when possible. In summer, their zones are covered with trees and shrubs, and they seem to disappear out of sight behind them a lot. Beautiful fur beasties throughout the year.

I hope, somehow, the US can manage to win over the sub-humans who want to destroy these beautiful beings. Surely evil will NOT win in the end.

I've never seen a black bear. That would be stupendous!

Thanks.

... seriously, whenever our new home is completed there. It's truly in the mountains. I can almost guarantee a bear sighting in most all but winter months.

The GSMNP has a bear density of approximately two bears per square mile. And there's a bear cub rescue 7 miles from us that welcomes visitors.

The photo of the young bear and its cloth bear friend is precious! The gesture of adding a soft, fuzzy friend for the little one is so thoughtful. It will undoubtedly be cuddling with it right away.

That face is wonderful!

I'll bet the waiting is excruciating the closer you get to moving into your mountain home. What a wonderful idea.

Mountain environments are supernaturally special. Nothing like them, not even close!

Thanks, and enjoy your new home. 🌄

When the wolves are awake tomorrow.

This rescue is not too far from NYC. Our son lives in Manhattan and I'm sure I could talk hubby into driving up to visit the wolf sanctuary whenever we're there.

Many, many thanks, Judi.
