The Florida House is expected Wednesday to approve a proposal that would establish a new resiliency office directly under Gov. Ron DeSantis, after Democrats were unable to make changes to address the causes of rising seas.
The measure (HB 7053), which would build on a 2021 law, would require the development of a resilience action plan for the state highway system, require a prioritized list of resilience projects that would include costs and timelines, and create a database that would identify such things as medical centers, utilities, emergency operations centers and airports that would be threatened by rising sea levels.
The House took up the bill Tuesday and positioned it for a vote. The bill is focused on what we can fix today, what we can fix tomorrow, and what we can continue to fix each and every day, bill sponsor Demi Busatta Cabrera, R-Coral Gables, said. Its focused on real results and real actions to protect our communities from flooding and sea level rise. However, Democrats argued the measure should do more. Theres sort of two sides to this problem, Rep. Ben Diamond, D-St. Petersburg said. Theres protecting our communities and making our communities more resilient to the issues of flooding and sea level rise. But then theres also stopping the causes of those problems in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and in terms of reducing our carbon emissions.
The Republican-dominated House on Tuesday rejected a pair of amendments proposed by Diamond that would have required the resiliency office and the states chief resiliency officer to investigate the causes of rising seas and to track the costs of resilience projects. Busatta Cabrera contended that Diamonds proposals wouldnt provide real results and would politicize the issue.

(9,943 posts)"It is far more effective and cheaper to prevent problems from occurring than to let problems grow and then try to solve them. It is especially important not to let short-term expediencies add to the growth of long-term problems. This is THE most important justification for government that the public needs to understand.
"Unfortunately, as human organizations or societies get bigger, older and more complex, Destructive Achievers tend to become dominant. They are promoted or elected to power because they are willing to satisfy the short-term desires of the most powerful members of the group, even at the expense of the group's long-term health. Republicans personify the popular reactive leader.
"True political leaders have a proactive approach to problem-solving. They believe that the first role of government is to prevent problems from getting worse, or from occurring in the first place. True leaders understand that it is quite possible for problems to expand beyond solution. Destructive Achievers, on the other hand (in order to satisfy their political supporters) try to cut short-term costs (e.g., taxes) by not addressing, or even admitting, that problems exist.
"In today's political environment, progressive Democrats are beyond doubt the proactive problem-solvers, and Republicans and conservative Democrats are reactive Destructive Achievers. This obvious fact MUST be demonstrated to the American voter. It should be quite easy to do."

(17,304 posts)All of the citizens of Florida will pay to protect the beachfront property of the rich. DeSantis is one of the worst Republicans in a sea of bad Republicans and he will only serve big money. If he wants to keep the ocean out of the mansions, he needs to stand on the beach, raise his arms and demand that the sea retreat.

So, yeah, good luck Florida.

(17,304 posts)The plan for dealing with salt water intrusion is to take water from the North end of the state and pipe it South so that they can keep pouring more and more people in. Us little folks up North don't need water anyway. Poor folks have a way of surviving without it.
Anyone who can look at these photos and think that there is not problem are a little daft.
