To make things even more exciting, we also had the chance to drift the BMW iX5 Hydrogen prototype. The hydrogen BMW is a rear-wheel drive vehicle delivering 170 horsepower. A small battery gives additional boost for a total of 374 horsepower, just like the new BMW 240i Coupe.

WHERE DO THEY GET HYDROGEN?

1. This gets rehashed everytime but hydrogen is an energy carrier.

Meaning it take energy to produce it and more energy to compress it. Then there are losses converting it into mechanical energy.
Battery powered electric vehicles are a much more efficient use of the energy

The cheapest way to produce it now is to "reform" natural gas requiring thermal energy and the process produces carbon byproducts. We aren't even close to having enough renewable energy sources to be able to produce enough hydrogen to replace petroleum fuels.
What is the real cost per equivalent gallon in these trial studies ? They are giving away the hydrogen and or subsidizing the price.

2. Literally everyone in today's hydrogen industry is working towards green hydrogen

Meaning it take energy to produce it and more energy to compress it.

Same with a battery (without compression)

Battery powered electric vehicles are a much more efficient use of the energy

But people pay for convenience every day. Not everyone is going to want to wait at a charger, especially salespeople.

The answer is BOTH BEV and H2.

What is the real cost per equivalent gallon in these trial studies ?

The real benefit will come with .01- .02 cents per kWh solar and wind

.01 cents per kWh = .50 cents per Kg H2 hydrogen.

Those are the numbers people are working with in China, India, Australia and parts of Europe.

"However, there is an elephant in the room that must be addressed — producing the vast quantities of green H2 that the world will need would require an absolutely massive amount of renewable energy.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), the world will need 19 exajoules of green hydrogen in the energy system in 2050 — between 133.8 million and 158.3 million tonnes a year.

Terawatts of renewable energy will be needed to produce green hydrogen, but that seems secondary to the demand from the rapidly growing electricity sector, which needs to decarbonise while simultaneously powering ever larger shares of the heating and transport sectors."

6. God forbid the existing business models of our automobile culture get broken!

This is just more flimflammery from the fossil fuel industry. They know this hydrogen fuel will be made from natural gas, and that the carbon will be dumped in the atmosphere. These cars simply shift the emissions from the tailpipe to the hydrogen producer.
