Washington state plans to ban most non-electric vehicles by 2030

Washington state plans to ban most non-electric vehicles by 2030, according to a newly signed bill by Gov. Jay Inslee.

The bill says that all vehicles of the model year 2030 or later that are sold, purchased, or registered in the state must be electric.

"On or before December 31, 2023, the interagency electric vehicle coordinating council ... shall complete a scoping plan for achieving the 2030 target," it reads.

The bill covers a lot of transportation issues in the state and is a part of a larger $16.9 billion transportation package called “Move Ahead Washington," which Inslee described as a way to create more efficient transportation options.

My current vehicle is a 2017 gas engine car, purchased in 2018. The car it replaced I drove for 13 years.

I hope the state has serious plans to help people with fewer financial resources to buy electric cars.

One important reason I haven't yet gotten an electric vehicle is that they are too damn expensive. Currently the very cheapest electric car I find on line starts at $28k, with the impressive range of 149-226 miles. https://www.cars.com/articles/here-are-the-11-cheapest-electric-vehicles-you-can-buy-439849/ I wonder how long it takes to fully recharge. I make enough long driving trips that taking several hours for recharging makes no sense to me. And no, I'm not able to have an electric car for driving around town and a gas one for the long trips.

The push to all electric cars conveniently overlooks that fact that electricity is not magic, it is usually produced by things that also cause pollution.
