German greenhouse gas emissions up 1.6 pct in 2012

Feb 25 (Reuters) - German greenhouse gas emissions rose 1.6 percent in 2012 as a result of more coal burning and gas use, Germany's Federal Environment Agency (UBA) said, adding the rise was smaller than had been expected after the government quit nuclear power.

CO2 emissions alone rose 2.0 percent from the year before. A wider use of renewable energy kept that increase in check.

However Flasbarth said the increased coal burning for power generation was worrying and he called for more sustainable carbon trading.

Prices for EU carbon permits have lost more than 70 percent of their value since May 2011, mainly due to a glut of permits exacerbated by slowing economies.

They're still working on it.

However one of the nasty realities is that Germany's economy was slack, so other forms of power use were constrained. The electricity sector increased emissions. If the economy does recover, you would expect that next year's numbers will be worse.
