Vilsack To Farmers, Ranchers, Foresters: Begin To Work Now To Prepare For Destabilized Climate

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told the nation’s farmers today they will need to brace for climate change and adapt.

“Our farmers, ranchers and forest landowners are the most innovative on earth, and they’re up to the task of meeting environmental challenges that lay ahead,” Vilsack said in comments made public today. “We know what we’re seeing on the ground – more intense weather events, and a greater number of them.”

He said the agriculture department “would be there to support the efforts of our farmers and ranchers to adapt to these new challenges.”

I reported in December on climate change and agriculture for the second part of an ongoing series on climate adaptation and found farmers who recognized changes were happening, but were not ready to attribute those changes to human activities, as mainstream science has concluded. I also found farmers who were buying into the mainstream science.
