Japanese nuclear authority staffing up for more rapid restarts.

Nikkei reported that the agency charged with overseeing nuclear plant safety plans to beef up its workforce to enhance its ability to check facilities before they restart operations.

The Secretariat of the Nuclear Regulation Authority plans to add more than 200 regular employees to its current 527 member staff in fiscal 2014. The inspection crew, which numbers 80 this fiscal year, will be more than doubled to enable more nuclear plants to be examined simultaneously. New graduates as well as experienced inspectors from other agencies will be hired.

New safety standards will come into force July 8th, but the current inspection staff can only check up to 6 reactors at three nuclear plants. With requests to restart 12 reactors at 6 facilities expected to come soon and the possibility of more to follow, there is concern that the inspections will drag on.
