Duke Energy Renewables will build two 200-megawatt wind farms in Texas to provide power for Austin Energy under a 25-year contract that could be worth up to $1 billion.

The Austin City Council voted June 27 to authorize the city-owned utility to execute two contracts with Duke for up to $500 million each.

The projects will be built in Starr County, Texas. One farm, Los Vientos III, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2014. The second, Los Vientos IV, should be online by June 2016, according to information provided to the City Council.
