Venezuelas asylum offer to former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden bolsters the case for the Keystone XL pipeline, supporters of the project say.
The proposed pipeline, which remains under White House review, would carry oil sands crude to Gulf Coast refiners that are now equipped to handle heavy grades currently imported from Venezuela and elsewhere. Approving Keystone would likely displace some of those imports.
Rep. Lee Terrys (R-Neb.) office said ... The offer of asylum to Snowden is exactly why it makes more sense to be entering into an agreement and strengthening our relationship with our country's number one trading partner
The Institute for Energy Research, a conservative advocacy group, made a similar point ...

(13,685 posts)It isn't so much the pipeline that is objectionable. It is that we will continue to divert needed monetary resources into fossil fuels rather than renewables.
The pipeline is a symbol of everything that is wrong with our present day energy sourcing, therefore this new pipeline must be opposed.
But, we shall continue down this path of building upon the fossil fuel energy sourcing. And the hidden costs keep building, day by day, hour by hour.
