Canada - DFO Bans All Salmon Fishing On The Fraser; 9 Boats, 60 Nets Seized, 28 Arrested

Fishery officers pulled up 10 more illegal nets in a weekend of patrolling on the Fraser River, where a total ban on fishing for summer sockeye remains in effect.

Another person is being investigated for Fisheries Act violations, bringing the total to 28, along with nine vessels and 60 nets seized since the ban was ordered earlier this month.

Some of the seized nets were unattended, and the majority were discovered between the Port Mann Bridge and Yale, although the ban extends upriver to Hell’s Gate.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans banned salmon fishing for everyone on the river, including First Nations, when this year’s summer sockeye run was estimated at just two million, nearly half the 3.7 million expected by the Pacific Salmon Commission.

Hopefully the First Nations saved for a rainy day--this will hit a few hard

The straight is packed with Columbia Coho this year (maybe devouring all the food). The Pink runs are anecdotally screwed as well. Im dreading another dismal Chinook run. Its one thing to read about this stuff. Walking out and watching the runs die out is crushing
