Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) has informed the IAEA that it has rated a leak of radioactive water at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station at level 3 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES).

The NRA formally posted the rating on the IAEA's web-based Unified System for Information Exchange on Incidents and Emergencies (USIE). Level 3 on the INES scale denotes a 'serious incident'.

Japanese authorities continue to provide the Agency with information on the situation at the plant, and Agency experts are following the issue closely.
