What a difference a year makes in Anchorage, Alaska.

On May 17-18, 2013, the latest measurable snowfall on record occurred. The high on May 17, 2013, was 37 degrees (a record low maximum for the date). On May 17, 2014, the high temperature was 73 degrees (a record high maximum for the date). We never know what to expect around here.

The weird thing about last year's summer is that after such a slow start, we had a record number of days above 80 degrees. But, of course, there's no climate change.

Climate Change. The reason why they are not pressuring the elected Republicans to do anything about it is on account of their concerns that the "solution" will be, like all other governmental elected officials' "solutions", nothing but more mismanaged and inept policies that are foisted on the middle class. (Just as paying off of the Trillions of dollars in war debts, bailout debts and Big Earner's tax cuts means cuts to Social Security checks, and also the delay regarding when you can even go n Social Security.)

What people foresee are these tax credits that advantage the Biggest Polluters, while meanwhile mom and pop will get a fine for not correctly dividing up their recycling. Etc.

You are right but it is more general than just "Democrats need to understand",
"individual Republicans" or "elected Republicans".

The correct substitutions for the above are "people", "ordinary" & "politicians".

That is exactly what happens and it doesn't matter about the claimed allegiance of
the individual 0.1%er putting his or her signature to each "bipartisan" decision.

Yes, some elected Democrats get it. Yes, some elected Republicans get it.

No, most of both are only in it for themselves, for their family & friends, for their own
personal profit and screw the rest of you.

That's the way it has been for decades and it ain't gonna change in any kind of hurry ...

so the earth is a few degrees warmer...what's the fuss all about?

What if we have more torrential rains and greater droughts? Why worry about fires burning out of control all over the world and low lying coastal areas being inundated?

Who gives a dang about that when we can ride in our air-conditioned Lexus SUVs and Escalades to our Starbucks coffee drive-throughs?

Why are you people getting so worked up? Seriously.

8. 80 degree days?
Mon May 19, 2014, 10:24 PM

I lived in Anchorage for many years, I can't remember many 80 degree days. You didn't plant your garden until after Memorial Day. I also lived in Fairbanks and can remember 65 below zero days in the winter. I read that the ice fog is really a serious problem now. I saw pictures of the Portage glacier and it has melted so much since I lived there. But, not to worry, we are not having global warming, Marco Rubio told me that. Ha! Ha!

The hot weather of July 2013 will go down in the history books: Anchorage on Tuesday broke the all-time record for consecutive days of 70 degrees or warmer, according to the National Weather Service.

Sure, that's not a heat wave by Lower 48 standards, but for Alaska it's downright balmy.

Tuesday marked the 14th straight day of 70 degrees or more for Alaska's largest city, breaking the previous record of 13 days, the Weather Service said in a written statement. The mercury hit that level three times in recorded memory, in 1936, 1953 and 2004, the Weather Service said.

Anchorage is also on the verge of breaking another heat record for the number of 70-degree-plus days this summer. So far, there have been 38 such days, putting 2013 in fourth place for that record, the Weather Service says. The record of 49 days was set in 2004.

I was trying to find exactly how many 80+ days we had, with no luck. It seems like it was at least five or six. I've lived here since 1975, and I never saw anything like it. We were all sweltering, but my gardens loved it.

I remember that "plant after Memorial Day" rule. Now they say when the birch leaves are as big as squirrel's ears. This year that happened almost overnight about May 10, very, very early. I'm putting my vegetables in the ground now. The trees are fully leafed out, like mid-summer. A lot of my perennials are already blooming.

You can't even see it from the visitor's center anymore.

Here's a shot of the Matanuska Glacier which has also receded a bit, but not nearly as much as Portage.

Had frost a few days ago.

I'm just now getting my garden in this year due to the late frost. Mind you I do believe we are in the midst of global warming though, its just that the weather is weird and getting weirder as time goes on.
