(4,452 posts)With some info on where you were it shouldn't be too hard to find out.
That sort of degradation is like pissing in your back yard, it's nothing compared to mountaintop removal and the damage it does.

(14,779 posts)In many places, do to the deer population, it is common to plant trees inside tubes, the trees grow tall inside the tubes. The tubes are removed after a few years.
I would have to see a better picture to give you any ideas, but they could be vents, tree tubes or markers for something.

I was returning home to DC area from Dayton, OH, just passing through.

(130,935 posts)from FrackCheckWV Report:
'Antero Resources had 280 employees and a million dollar monthly payroll. It was founded in 2002 and has headquarters in Denver. They have maintained offices in Ellenboro, Mt. Clare (located at Willow Beach) and Marietta, Ohio, but plan to consolidate at new offices in Bridgeport.' ((We stayed in Bridgeport night before this drive, and passed Ellenboro near this pic.))
'Several people in the crowd began to ask politely hostile questions as the presentation went on.'
I posted about a conversation I'd heard night before, at motel in Bridgeport, where locals questioned safety/wisdom of fracking. I was/am pleased that the people are questioning this. It appears, of course, that the mining cos. are prepared to 'respond.'
'As the presentation was cut off, the big boss reminded the people in the room at some length, We are regulated by the State and Federal Government
All the regulating agencies were listed in the video mentioned above, too. This appears in his mind to lend some moral authority in the eyes of the drillers, in addition to the simple fact of the power it gives to use the State apparatus to do what they do.'

(5,378 posts)It's being built in the flood plain, they bought off the army corps of engineers.
This floodplain has already been altered beyond what is reasonable
This floodplain handles significant flood waters, allowing waters to spread out during heavy rain preventing flood damage to both upstream and downstream landowners.
The allowance of more fill in this historical floodplain will restrict waters from spreading out. In conjunction with the continued development resulting in the loss of trees and vegetation, which takes up excess water during heavy rainfall, nearby landowners will experience more damage.
Of course any spills that may occur at this site have the potential of ending up in the creek and being washed downstream to the West Union Water Plant as well as entering the groundwater table.

(5,378 posts)All of this shale gas "prosperity" has had a negative effect on my livelihood, lifestyle and property values. So, yeah, I'm in the fight.

Was driving through (from a funeral in Dayton, to DC area,) wanted a scenic route home, daughter attended WVU, so was a good opportunity to view wv 'sacrifice zone.' Any thoughts on possibility for real prosperity there?

(5,378 posts)...and the water, air and ground aren't too poisoned to use, there may be something, but, you also need the will of the people. Right now a lot of them just think it's a free new truck and will last forever, and that the "damn treehuggers" want to stop them from gettin' what that nice gas man promised...This is the 4th "boom" in this state and we are still one of the poorest states in the nation.
