There have undoubtedly been stable periods in human history, but you and your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents never lived through one, and neither will any children or grandchildren you may have or come to have. Everything has been changing continuously, profoundly from the role of women to the nature of agriculture. For the past couple of hundred years, change has been accelerating in both magnificent and nightmarish ways.
Yet when we argue for change, notably changing our ways in response to climate change, were arguing against people who claim were disrupting a stable system. They insist that were rocking the boat unnecessarily.
I say: rock that boat. Its a lifeboat; maybe the people in it will wake up and start rowing. Those who think theyre hanging onto a stable order are actually clinging to the wreckage of the old order, a ship already sinking, that we need to leave behind.
As you probably know, the actual oceans are rising almost eight inches since 1880, and thats only going to accelerate. Theyre also acidifying, because theyre absorbing significant amounts of the carbon we continue to pump into the atmosphere at record levels. The ice that covers the polar seas is shrinking, while the ice shields that cover Antarctica and Greenland are melting. The water locked up in all the polar ice, as its unlocked by heat, is going to raise sea levels staggeringly, possibly by as much as 200 feet at some point in the future, how distant we do not know. In the temperate latitudes, warming seas breed fiercer hurricanes.

(4,101 posts)NYC! My friend is presenting at UN on climate and the discussions we have had
And emails of Chris Hedges, or Naomi Klein's recent articles have
Toughened up her 3 min presentation! I'm proud of her. I have let
Her know that I think the UN isn't exactly the all angelic institution
She thinks it is. She may be beginning to see the light.
I will be be tweeting some photos and info from the march.
Wish I could stay the whole week!

(21,088 posts)If the research done by the Apollo-Gaia project is accurate, as I think it is, and the total earth system sensitivity to CO2 is actually 7.8C per doubling, we are already committed to a 4C average temperature rise, even if we don't put another tonne of carbon into the atmosphere. Given that the current increase of under 1C is proving to be dangerous...

(10,495 posts)In order for America to make the significant changes needed we must first make a radical political change. I posit that we MUST achieve Publicly Funded Federal, State, and Local Elections (PFE's) and outlaw all campaign contributions to be able to make the necessary changes to our society to have a chance at long term survival.
As long as the PTB can buy our candidates we will not make those changes, and the clock is ticking. Bernie Sanders is the only national candidate talking about and supporting PFE's. We need to show other candidates that this has very strong support. Currently, we do not have Representative Democracy, only the Oligarchs do. I still find it hard to believe that most people don't believe or are not concerned about this. We allow legalized bribery for our politicians to get into office and then scratch our heads when our Representative don't vote for things that have the overwhelming support of the American people! Duh!
