I recently opined about the constitutionality of the now defunct Monsanto Protection Act as a means for lobbyists to bypass the checks and balances of Article III courts. The powerful lobby process of Dow Chemical is in the spotlight as the Environmental Protection Agency's recent decisions to approve a new neonicotinoid pesticide ingredients for use on crops, most of which depend on pollinators, without label warning protection, is challenged. The approval comes as the EPA is in the midst of a study on the safety of neonicotinoids, which is not scheduled for completion for another four years.
The appeal, filed in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals July 10, by the National Pollinators Defense Fund, the American Honeybees Association, the National Honey Bee Advisory Board, the American Beekeeping Federation, and three professional beekpeers, seeks changes in the labeling of the poison, whose class has been proven to be fatal to honeybees and other pollinators and is the subject of a wide scale temporary ban in Europe that went into effect earlier this year.
Honey bees are responsible for pollinating 60 percent of the world's food supply. Since 1972, feral honey bees in the U.S. have declined 80 percent, and domestic bees in the U.S. are down to 60 percent. Since 2006, the epidemic has been referred to as CCD, or "colony collapse disorder." CCD has been coined as the "AIDS" epidemic of the honeybee, the extinction of which would destroy most of the world's food supply and cause a devastating economic meltdown. Neonicotinoid pesticides, such as Dow's sulfoxator, like its sister toxics, acetamiprid, clothianidin and imidacloprid, are some of the most widely used pesticides in the world, and have been responsible for rising bee deaths since 2005.
The EPA approved the use of neonicotinoid clothianidin, co-developed by Bayer, in 2003 against the warnings of its own scientists. Despite EPA's findings that clothianidin poses a major risk to nontarget insects, such as honey bees, and information from standard tests and field studies, as well as incident reports involving other neonicotinoid insecticides suggesting the potential for long term toxic risk to honey bees and other beneficial insects, Bayer's powerful lobby was able to get the toxic approved.

(14,255 posts)chemicals to be spread to countries that have banned them, because banning them affects profits.
And if the absence of bees affects the Monsantos, they will just get more government handouts and magically come up with stuff that does not need bees, but is proprietary.

I own a small 12 acre farm.
It is surrounded with a barrier of thick, tall, mature trees.
On the other side of all the trees is farmland.
They grow corn, soybeans, and tobacco.
They are always spraying pesticides, insecticides, and fertilizers.
I think my tree barrier prevents over spray.
I have never put anything poisonous on my 12 acres.
I have not bush hogged for 3 years.
My fields are covered in golden rod.
Bees love golden rod.
My fields are filled with bees.
My mother is 90 years old.
She was amazed at how many bees I have.
I was so happy to see them feeding and hear them buzzing about their business.
Maybe I should charge the farmers a fee for the pollinating services of my bees.

(160,545 posts)It would be heavenly to see enough of them in one place so you could actually hear them.
Congrats, and thank you for your standards toward life on earth.
I'm thinking only good Democrats should have farms! Republicans abuse their chances to put things right by chasing quick profits at all costs other than their own.
Look into charging pollination fees! Name the bees in the fields the "Knause Bees."

(13,108 posts)I have lived on this farm for 12 years.
This is the longest I have went without bush hogging.
It was very exciting to see and hear so many many bees.
12 acres of golden rod equals many happy buzzing bees.
Clover use to do the trick, but they didn't seem to be interested in the clover flowers.
Hope you and yours are well and safe.
