[font size=3]The U.S. military was an early leader in investigating, testing and adopting renewable energy technologies in a variety of settings, including battlefield energy security and enhancing energy efficiency at its military bases. In its latest iteration, the U.S. Navy has signed a deal with SolarCity to provide solar powered military housing in San Diego.
The U.S. military's interest in alternative energy resources and generation has been consistently high for several years
whether it meant exploring the practicality of microgrid technology to provide secure, reliable power in the field to "net zero" energy-efficiency measures at it bases. In addition, the Department of Defense has participated in numerous programs to enhance energy security and reliability, alternate fuels for ships, aircraft and other applications.
In a deal signed with solar energy innovator SolarCity earlier this month, the Navy has contracted for rooftop solar installations to provide power for almost 6,000 homes for Navy and Marine Corps personnel in the San Diego area. The agreement stipulates that SolarCity will design, install and maintain the residential solar power plants and a public-private partnership will buy the power generated at prices lower than local utility rates, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Lincoln Military Housing, a company that specializes in real estate development and housing, has said the arrangement could save $60 million or more throughout the term of the 20-year power purchase agreement with SolarCity.
