Window Film: An Energy Savings Superhero?

In a study commissioned by the IWFA, and conducted by ConSol, the energy saving effect of installing window film was compared to several traditional energy saving techniques, such as updating HVAC systems, adding R-38 ceiling insulation, and air sealing and caulking.

The study shows that in older homes and buildings, window film can represent a 70% ROI annually, making it one of the most cost-effective energy efficiency measures.

Great article highlighting a must-have energy saving product. The ROI numbers in the report were calculated using $4-$8 per square foot window tint costs. Professional grade film can be purchased for $2-$4, doubling the calculated ROI in the report. Installation uses soapy water and squeegees, no special solutions or chemicals are needed. We would recommend first timers to purchase pre-cut home tint available from sites like SnapTint Home Tint which also offers pre-cut film, installation tool kits, video instructions, as well as full-color written instructions.

Of course window coatings are going to have a high ROI over other home improvement projects; the window coatings themselves aren't all that expensive compared to the thousands of dollars needed to replace an old furnace or put in extra insulation. The flip side of that is that a high ROI on a cheap investment means you aren't saving all that much money because you didn't invest that much money into it in the first place.
