Record La Nina linked to climate change

(Australia)THREE of the nation's leading climate scientists have linked the past two years of record wet weather to climate change in their strongest findings yet on the impact of global warming on the nation's climate.

Professors Will Steffen, Matthew England and David Karoly, in a paper to be released today by the Climate Commission, find global warming may have contributed to the strength of the La Nina event and the heavy rainfall and flooding.

They also contend that the heavy rains do not contradict the trend towards drier weather for southern and eastern areas of Australia and find that despite two years of above average rains, southeast Australia continues to suffer from a cumulative rainfall deficit.

They reiterate warnings that global warming will produce longer dry spells, punctuated by heavier rainfall events, in southern and southwest Australia.

Since they seem to be seasonal events in North America (Northern Hemisphere) created by ocean warming or cooling which expand past the hemispheres, and the seasons are reversed?

I'm curious and am hoping that you or someone from Australia, New Zealand, etc. will know. Since this is a piece from Australia and may be more about what they have suffered in recent years.

The wiki page gives a good summary to get started, but I've lifted these two images which sum it up nicely:

El Niño:

What a fabulous planet, all of these things going on at the same time, just mind blowing. I'll read the link and I appreciate your answer.

It seems to link to the Arctic Oscillation and the North Atlantic oscillation, but when I tried to understand it all at once my cerebrum imploded.

Almost all the cheeseheads were out playing.

I've been stuck inside grading papers and exams.

But I've taken some time to tease the trolls.
