Originally posted in GD, but it is about frugality.
Explanation; in Illinois (for instance) a one-pack-a-day habit costs a two-person household earning $15,500 (100% of Federal Poverty Level) 54% of their income.

        It certainly has gotten expensive to smoke.

(8,784 posts)2. It's a shame. I work with a lot of low income families and some of them smoke.
        I bite my tongue, but I think of all the things they might have if they quit. As a former smoker, I know it's not easy to quit.

        I gave up on name brand cigarettes awhile ago when I went on disability. There was no way I could afford that on an income of a little over 1k a month. so I smoked dirt cheat Murano filtered little cigars ($1.46 a pack) until I quit for good earlier this year.
