Millennials Want to Walk, Prefer Short Commute

Aug. 14--WASHINGTON -- Millennials prefer walking over driving by a substantially wider margin than any other generation, according to a new poll conducted by the National Association of Realtors and the Transportation Research and Education Center at Portland State University.

The 2015 National Community and Transportation Preference Survey found that millennials surveyed, those aged 18 to 34, prefer walking as a mode of transportation by 12 percentage points over driving.

Millennials were also shown to prefer living in attached housing, living within walking distance of shops and restaurants, and having a short commute, and they are the most likely age group to make use of public transportation.

Millennials surveyed showed a stronger preference than other generations for expanding public transportation and providing transportation alternatives to driving, such as biking and walking, while also increasing the availability of trains and buses. Millennials likewise favor developing communities where people do not need to drive long distances to work or shop. .........(more)

1. Owning a car is expensive.

In my early 20s I lived a mile from work in a town that had bus service. I sold my car & started walking & riding the bus. I lost a few pounds, got fit, & saved a ton of money. Which I had to spend on a car when I moved out of town, lol. We now have bus service into town, but it took a long time. I hate to drive. You experience the pinnacle of human stupidity & rudeness behind the wheel of a car. I'm always stunned at the risk people will take to get one car length ahead.

2. Once they get married and have children, the home in the city gets awfully small

They will be no different then any other generation who will grow out of their apartment or starter home.

3. Guess I was a couple of generations ahead of my time.

And that would explain why they're piling into SF for tech jobs down here, to both of our detriments.
