Top pro-Kurdish lawyer shot dead in Turkey

A top pro-Kurdish lawyer has been shot dead while caught in the crossfire during an armed clash involving the police in Turkey's restive southeast, hospital sources say.

Tahir Elci, head of the bar in southeastern Diyarbakir province and a campaigner for Kurdish rights, died of gunshot wounds to the head, the hospital sources and witnesses said.

Elci has been criticised for saying the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) was not a terrorist group.

He was detained in October and was awaiting trial for comments he made about the PKK on CNN Turk TV.
