According to defectors, North Korean officers use their ranks to require sexual services from their subordinated female soldiers. The female soldiers find it very difficult to refuse because they would disadvantaged when it comes to promotions and salaries. They are often beat by their officers if they refuse. Currently 40% of soldiers are female soldiers, and their living conditions are very mediocre. Often, female soldiers wish to marry a senior official in order to improve their living conditions. It is often told that senior female officials in the North Korean army were able to reach their ranks because they provided sexual services to senior officers willingly. These high ranking female officers would then focus on making sexual service arrangements for higher ranking officials than to improve the army.
