I'm getting confused about Syria.

Is the US only supporting "rebels"? If the US supports the overthrow, won't that make it easier for ISIL to take Syria? What about jihadist rebels? Isn't ISIL also trying to overthrow the Syrian govt? I thought the US was glad Iran was in Syria to fight ISIL. Yes, I know that Iran and Russia support the Syrian dictator, and Russia is also directly involved in the fight. Can someone clarify this for me?

Didn't the US shift a bit a while back towards protecting Assad along with Iran to help defeat ISIL?
