(found article on topic only in german so far)

-------------------

Turkey is on its way to pass a new constitution. President Erdogan is alleged to try to transform Turkey into an authoritarian state. Observers fear that the new constitution would achieve just that.

The EU-parliament has just approved a motion to stop membership-negotiations with Turkey immediately in case that Turkey would adopt the new constitution.

--------------

Membership-negotiations started in 2005. Turkey would have to adapt to EU laws and regulations in 35 topics (economy, scientific cooperation, environment, justice...).

In the 12 years so far, Turkey has adapted to EU-standards in 1(!) area.

Polls show, more than 70% of EU-citizens are against Turkey becoming a EU-member.
