Trudeau's own MPs demand plan for Canada-U.S. border

OTTAWA — American lawmakers have so far spearheaded the push to get Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to ease pandemic restrictions at the Canada-U.S. border.

But as more Canadians are vaccinated the pressure is now coming from within Trudeau’s own Liberal caucus.

Longtime Liberal MP Wayne Easter, who chairs the House of Commons finance committee, told POLITICO on Thursday that the Trudeau government must lay out a border reopening plan — and soon.

“As you get into July 1, Canada Day, and July 4, Independence Day, then those target dates are real pressure points for wanting to be normalized,” Easter, who co-chairs the Canada–U.S. Inter-Parliamentary Group, said in an interview. “The heat’s on, and I think we absolutely must have a plan.”

We need to get to BC to get away from the bombardment here. Last year we had to stay home and the poor dogs were frantic. It's so nice and calm up there on July 4th and we are really hoping we can go this year.

2. As a Canadian, I want to see the majority fully vacinated

before we open the border. We should be getting close by July as long as we get the vaccine we are promised and under contract to get. They can give a time line but there must be caveats and I still hope there will be a requirement to show proof of vaccination to go back and forth on the border. We are a country that over 80% want or have received the vaccine and we do not want to take chances. We are just slowly coming out of more shut downs, I hardly think this is the time.
