Hungary Is Already Facing Legal Action Over Its "Grotesque" Anti-LGBTQ+ Law
Hungary may soon face legal action from the European Union (EU) following the passage of a Russia-style propaganda law banning information on LGBTQ+ identities from being shared with minors.
In a Wednesday statement, EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen vowed to use all the powers of the commission to ensure that the rights of all EU citizens are guaranteed. She called Hungarys law a shame and said that it goes against the fundamental values of the European Union: human dignity, equality and respect for human rights.
This bill clearly discriminates against people based on their sexual orientation, she told the Associated Press. I believe in a European Union where you are free to be who you are and love whomever you want.
Von der Leyen did not detail what the action might entail, but the EUs executive branch could refer the matter to the European Court of Justice (ECJ), which has the ability to levy major penalties against Hungary. In 2019, the ECJ fined Austria 13 million Euros or roughly $15.5 million dollars for violating workers rights.
