Philip Goldberg tapped as new U.S. ambassador to S. Korea: source

A senior official at South Korea's presidential office Cheong Wa Dae earlier said the U.S. government has notified Seoul of its intention to name Goldberg as new chief of its mission to Seoul.

Goldberg served as coordinator for implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1874 on North Korea in 2009-2010 before serving as U.S. ambassador to the Philippines between 2013 and 2016.

He has also served as ambassador to Bolivia and assistant secretary of state for intelligence and research.

It looks like they picked an enforcer rather than someone with experience negotiating with North Korea. If the corrupt tyrant in waiting Yoon Seok-yeol becomes president there will be no restraints on getting tough with North Korea or worse. If Lee Jae-myung, a democrat, is elected, then the US ambassador can operate as an imperial protectorate-general to hamstring and restrict the South Korean government. Namely, "no daylight/lockstep" policies. Goldberg speaks Spanish rather than Korean. The only consolation is that one would be hard pressed to pick someone worse as ambassador than the former Admiral Harris. We shall see.
