UK ports are asking for government help to identify which of more than 6,000 Russia-affiliated ships

Port operators in the UK are asking the government for more specific guidance about which ships are prohibited from entering their facilities a week after a ban was announced on Russian vessels.

Operators tell the Financial Times that the regulation puts undue responsibility on their shoulders, and raised concerns about the legal ramifications of making the wrong call.

Last week's broad request covered both commercial vessels, such as oil tankers, as well as private yachts owned by Russian billionaire oligarchs.

"We will seek to support UK ports in identifying Russian ships within scope of the above, and will communicate directly with relevant ports when we identify ships bound for UK ports who fall within scope of the above," the original memo said.
