Hong Kong martial arts instructor, assistant accused of training pro-independence 'warriors'

A martial arts instructor and his assistant are set to appear in court on Tuesday after being accused by national security police of leading an underground organization that advocated Hong Kong independence and trained members in the use of weapons in preparation for allegedly subversive acts.

Police said on Tuesday that an undercover officer had infiltrated the group to gather evidence, with a force insider adding that authorities were trying to track down and question dozens of people who had joined the “ghost-killer squad” training classes since 2020.

The insider said the underground organization, which was planning to form a self-described “black warriors troop”, was allegedly run by the martial arts instructor, 59, and his female assistant, 62, both of whom were picked up during a Sunday raid on a venue in Tsim Sha Tsui where the training classes were held.

According to police, posts the group shared online had called on people to join the classes to learn martial arts and the use of weapons to prepare themselves for a future revolution against the political powers that be.
