Why Putin can NEVER declare victory in Ukraine. And why he actually doesn't want to.

What is this "special military operation" about?
Russia is trying to defeat the Nazis in Ukraine!

And who or what is a Nazi?

According to the major russian newspaper Ria Novosti, an Ukrainian is a Nazi if he thinks that Ukraine is a legitimate country.

And according to statements from russian media last weekend, anybody who doesn't like Russia is a Nazi.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/putins-propagandists-explain-new-meaning-of-nazism-and-its-got-nothing-to-do-with-jews

“Nazism doesn’t necessarily mean antisemitism, as the Americans keep concocting. It can be anti-Slavic, anti-Russian,” said Solovyov, a sanctioned Kremlin propagandist who has had two villas seized on Italy's Lake Como.

“Of course,” replied political scientist Elena Ponomareva. “Today we are seeing substantive steps to revive a global Nazi project. And why is this a global Nazi project? Because Ukraine is the place where this revival starts, but not without the support of Great Britain, the United States, the European Union etc...”

So... Putin cannot simply declare that the "special military operation" has been a success and that Russia will now occupy Donbas, Luhansk and Mariupol and then go back to being peaceful.

There is no "Mission Accomplished" possible for Russia in this war, until the entirety of Ukraine is defeated, which won't happen.

This war is a quagmire that will isolate Russia internationally, kill young russian men and poison russian minds with hatred and propaganda for years and decades to come... WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT PUTIN WANTS.

A neverending war that Russia cannot stop and that Ukraine won't stop. Which will FOREVER deliver the perfect excuse for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING Putin and his cabal of thieves do domestically.
"Vote Putin, because war."
"No more freedom of the press, because war."
"Report unpatriotic citizens to the police, because war."
"No more elections, because war."
"The Putin-government is nationalizing the economy and his buddies are taking over everything, because war."
"Stop complaining about poverty and corruption and be happy with what you got, because war."

Why does Putin want a neverending war? Because it keeps people busy. It keeps people from thinking about the situation. It keeps them from questioning authority.

think that the Russian Federation will split into about 22 individual republics. No more Federation -- Moscow will not be able to milk the others to support itself.

The economy of Ukraine will be supported by NATO countries. Ukraine comes out on top. Perhaps it will offer to make Russia a suburb in Ukraine.

To all the other eurasian peoples, the Soviet Union was a multi-ethnic international alliance.
To the Russians, the Soviet Union was their russian empire.

When the Soviet Union broke apart, for all the other eurasian peoples it meant that things would basically go on as usual with local politicians, except that Moscow was no longer giving them orders.
When the Soviet Union broke apart, for the Russians it meant THE COLLAPSE OF THEIR EMPIRE.

For the Russians it was a TRAGEDY and NATIONAL TRAUMA. For the other ethnicities, it meant freedom.

The Russians have this conspiracy theory that the West is trying to destroy Russia as a country and break it apart along ethnic lines. (I know that because I have a russian co-worker who believes this.)
