Sinn Fein says 'hearts and minds' need to be won for Irish reunification

Sinn Fein president Mary Lou McDonald predicted Tuesday that the reunification of Ireland would happen in the next decade, while acknowledging that her party still needed to make the case to the public.

The Irish nationalists won a historic victory at elections in Northern Ireland earlier this month, overturning a century of dominance by pro-UK unionists.

The party put reunification on the back burner, however, preferring to campaign on issues such as the rising cost of living to win over voters.

But McDonald, the all-Ireland leader of the party, said reuniting north and south was now back in play due to changing attitudes on both sides of the border.

It’s likely to be true. A big key is strengthening the economy, which benefits all, no matter the party affiliation. The Unionist control of the past only benefited their supporters and followers, and their 17 th century mindset is on the wain, as fewer people identify by religion and most don’t want a return to the troubles which was fomented by their dominance of society through discrimination in housing, jobs, and voter suppression. Younger folks realize that the Brits don’t care for them, and the Tory party basically has disdain for them anyway. Many of the “prod” population don’t feel threatened by the other 26 counties of the Republic, and damn well know the pope has no say in how the government works. Besides that, most love the ability to freely travel back and forth to enjoy all the beautiful scenery and friendly people, especially without a soldier aiming a gun at you while crossing an unnatural border.
