Russia orders block on Caspian oil pipeline that could pull 1 million barrels a day from Europe's su

supply

A Russian court has ordered the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), which transports oil from Kazakhstan to the Black Sea, to suspend operations for 30 days.

The ruling Tuesday has the potential to cut another 1 million barrels per day of crude supply to Europe, when the continent is already mired in an energy crisis.

The pipeline is one of the world's largest, handling 1% of global oil flows, and CPC said it plans to appeal the suspension in the Novorossiysk court.

The block could weigh heavily on Kazakhstan, which transports 80% of its energy exports via the CPC pipeline, per Bloomberg. The nation is now scrambling to find another way to get oil to Europe, which has taken blow after blow during the ongoing energy war.

Kazakhstan is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, a kinda-sorta russian equivalent of an early-stage EU. Except...

* Kazakhstan had HUGE anti-government protests one year ago.

* Very shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a member of the Moscow city-council called for the denazification of Kazakhstan... which nobody in the West paid attention to, but I bet Kazakhstan realized that Russia could use the same reasoning they used to invade Ukraine to invade Kazakhstan.

* Now a little bit miffed, Kazakhstan refused to hold a joint WWII-victory-parade together with russian forces.

* About a month ago, at an international conference hosted by Russia, Putin said that ex-soviet countries like Kazakhstan don't count as real, individual countries because they were historically part of czarist Russia. ... Which is exactly the reasoning Russia used to justify the conquest of Ukraine.

* Aaaaaaaaaaand afraid of being hit by sanctions like Belarus, Kazakhstan is trying to maintain a friendly business-relationship with the West by selling them oil.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand Kazakhstan is a multi-ethnic state that prides itself in its multi-culturalism. That's why they aren't "getting" Russia's obsession with czarist Russia at the expense of all the other ethnicities that live in the country Russia.

China and India are buying their oil at deeply discounted prices. Not much to support a war effort, especially when that’s all ya got to sell.
