(Bloomberg) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin is pursuing his war aims in Ukraine with a religious fervor and is unlikely to change course even as his eight-month invasion is beleaguered by setbacks, Estonias spy chief said.
Mikk Marran, Estonias outgoing espionage chief, said that the Baltic nations intelligence indicated that the Russian president isnt having second thoughts about the conflict, despite the lack of strategic accomplishments and a firmer line from an expanded NATO.
Hes still on a kind of a religious or a messianic mission -- and we see that Putin is preparing his country and its army to continue fighting for a long time, Marran, 44, told a group of reporters in Tallinn on Tuesday.
The assessment aligns with Putins escalation of the conflict in recent weeks, pressing forward with an illegal bid to annex four Ukrainian regions even as his forces are being pushed back by a robust counteroffensive in the eastern and southern parts of the country.

(53,794 posts)Not true at all as he's made every mistake in the book with his so-called 3-day special military operation. It's now 9-months-long and Russia's once-vaunted army is losing, is no longer feared and has been exposed as third-rate.
Now Putin has made his next big mistake with this mass, 300k man mobilization thrown into Ukraine with hardly any training or equipment with the harsh winter coming up.
It's going to be a long, hard slog but it won't end well for Putin and the Russians.
