Denmark summons US envoy over claims of influence ops in Greenland - DW News

Denmark's government has summoned America's top diplomat in Copenhagen over reports of US nationals allegedly carrying out "influence operations" on the island. Danish media say at least three US citizens with links to President Trump were attempting to promote Greenland's secession from Denmark and joining the United States. President Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to take control of the Arctic territory, which is largely autonomous but part of the Kingdom of Denmark. We got insights from Ulrik Pram Gad from the Danish Institute for International Studies, DW Correspondent Jack Parrock, and Marisol Maddox, senior Arctic fellow at the Institute of Arctic Studies at Dartmouth University.

The US has told Denmark to "calm down" after the top US diplomat in Copenhagen was summoned over claims that Americans had been conducting covert operations in Greenland.

Denmark's public broadcaster DR quoted sources as saying the aim was to infiltrate society and promote its secession from Denmark to the US, although it was unable to clarify who the men were working for.

A White House official would not confirm an influence campaign was underway, but said: "We think the Danes need to calm down."

Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said "any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the Kingdom [of Denmark] will of course be unacceptable".
