LIVE: Donald Trump says Venezuela airspace now closed as tensions surge

By Virginia Pietromarchi and Farah Najjar

November 29, 2025

US President Donald Trump declares the airspace above and surrounding Venezuela should be considered “closed in its entirety” in the latest escalation of tensions between the two countries.

The US president’s statement comes as Trump’s administration piles pressure on Venezuela with a major military deployment in the Caribbean that includes the world’s largest aircraft carrier.

No immediate response from Venezuela after Trump’s social media post on Saturday.

US forces have carried out air strikes against more than 20 alleged Venezuelan drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean since early September, killing more than 80 people.

He spins the globe, pokes a finger and begins with the threats. Bullets to follow…Has Congress approved of this war. Even Dick Cheney got permission for his senseless invasion of Iraq! Where is Congress on this?

Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world—300 billion barrels—even larger than reserves in Saudi Arabia. Mr. Trump and his oil industry friends may imagine that by deposing President Nicolas Maduro and installing a friendly government there, the US would have unlimited access to this huge oil reserve, which is five times larger than the proven reserves in the US. Never mind the fact that for any hope of future climate stability, most of this oil needs to stay right where it is, in the ground.

I would imagine it’s the same in Venezuela. Trump just wants to have the biggest pile of chips in front of him in any game and it doesn’t matter whether he got them honestly or whether they’re any good or not. He just needs a big pile. in fact, I think he likes it better when he gets his riches dishonestly. We are not dealing with a normal human being here. It’s not even normal human greed

in his best interest. Jan 6th, he orchestrated a coup. I don't doubt the depth of his depravity since then.
