Kushner calls Barrot after fallout - FRANCE 24 English

According to sources, the US envoy pledges not to 'interfere' in France affairs. François Picard speaks to Jeffrey Hawkins, former US ambassador to the Central African Republic and research fellow at IRIS.

- Diplomatic Protocol Breach: U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner skipped a summons from the French Foreign Ministry to meet with Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France. Former ambassador Jeffrey Hawkins calls a serious violation of diplomatic norms and a sign of disrespect toward France.

- Performative Diplomacy: Kushner’s actions—like publishing an open letter in the Wall Street Journal and retweeting criticism of French policy—are seen as aimed more at appealing to Trump and MAGA audiences than engaging constructively with France.

- Violation of Vienna Convention: Publicly criticizing a host country’s internal politics, as Kushner has done, breaches the Vienna Convention, which prohibits diplomats from interfering in domestic affairs.

- Repeated Behavior: This is not the first time Kushner has bypassed diplomatic channels; he previously criticized France’s recognition of Palestine publicly rather than raising concerns privately.

- Political Ties Over Diplomacy: Kushner’s background—as Trump’s father-in-law, a former real estate developer, and a pardoned felon—raises questions about his suitability and motives as a diplomat, with his actions appearing politically driven.

- French Response Justified: Hawkins supports France’s firm reaction, noting that while meeting opposition figures is normal, publicly attacking a host nation’s policies crosses a line and undermines bilateral trust.

That's exactly why he was given the position. To look like he's doing MAGA's bidding in France. ChicagoTeamster 20 hrs ago #1

I wouldn't be surprised to find he is coordinating with National Rally on messaging against the Macron government.
