Violence erupts as Hong Kong police move in on protesters

HONG Kong police last night arrested more than 80 people and used batons and ‘tear spray’ to disperse pro-democracy crowds angry at the decision to demolish part of their demonstration site in Mong Kok.

The Occupy Central protest movement experienced its most violent night in almost two months, when thousands of supporters faced off with police late into the night at Mong Kok, in the Kowloon district.

Police and court bailiffs dismantled several barriers along the busy Argyle Street yesterday, after a court order demanded that barricades be removed after nearly two months.

The move angered protesters and numbers swelled into the night when police began arresting demonstrators who blocked their paths.
