Lebanon detains Islamic State leader Baghdadi's wife

Lebanese security forces have detained a wife and son of Islamic State (IS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi near the border with Syria, the army says.

The pair, whose names were not given, were picked up by military intelligence after entering Lebanon 10 days ago.

The al-Safir newspaper reported that Baghdadi's wife was being questioned at the Lebanese defence ministry.

In June, Baghdadi was named the leader of the "caliphate" created by IS in the parts of Syria and Iraq it controls.

Lebanon detains wife of Islamic State leader

BY LAILA BASSAM AND SYLVIA WESTALL
BEIRUT Tue Dec 2, 2014 6:26am EST

(Reuters) - The Lebanese army detained a wife and daughter of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as they crossed from Syria nine days ago, security officials said on Tuesday, in a setback to the group as it comes under increased military pressure.

The woman was identified as Saja al-Dulaimi, an Iraqi, by a Lebanese security official and a senior political source.

The Lebanese newspaper As-Safir reported she had been detained in coordination with "foreign intelligence".

The arrest is a blow to Baghdadi and could be used as a bargaining chip against his group, which has captured many foreign, Iraqi and Syrian prisoners and declared a caliphate in territory it has seized in Syria and Iraq.

It's an honorable tradition in the middle east--a way of securing "appropriate" behavior from an adversary or they will risk consequences. It does not have the highly negative connotation there that it does in USA...in fact, it's seen as far preferable to outright murder.

I'm sure she's being held in comfortable circumstances.

I love the "classic denial" from the unnamed fighter/spokesman:

An Islamic State fighter denied that Baghdadi's wife had been arrested. "I have checked with our leaders and they said it was false news. The Lebanese are lying," he said from inside Syria.

Yeah, right! Keep telling yourself that....

Smooth move, Lebanon!!!
