Black Lives Matter must rescind anti-Israel declaration

https://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/columns/2016/08/12/black-lives-matter-must-rescind-anti-israel-declaration/EHDYV3gNLwrTTwfp0JA8QN/story.html

It is a real tragedy that Black Lives Matter — which has done so much good in raising awareness of police abuses — has now moved away from its central mission and has declared war against the nation state of the Jewish people. In a recently issued “platform,” more than 60 groups that form the core of the Black Lives Matter movement went out of their way to single out one foreign nation to accuse of genocide and apartheid.

...

Genocide means the deliberate extermination of a race, such as done by Nazi Germany to Jews and Sinti and Roma or by the Hutu against the Tutsi in Rwanda. It has no application to deaths caused by self-defense measures taken to protect citizens against terrorism. To falsely accuse Israel of “genocide” — the worst crime of all, and the crime whose very name was coined to describe the systematic murder of 6 million Jews — is anti-Semitic.

Until and unless Black Lives Matter removes this blood libel from its platform and renounces it, no decent person — black, white, or of any other racial or ethnic background — should have anything to do with it. We should continue to fight against police abuses by supporting other organizations or forming new ones. But we must not become complicit in the promotion of anti-Semitism just because we agree with the rest of the Black Lives Matter program.

I really want to support BLM, which has a lot of good policy proposals. But I cannot do so if they insist on this anti-Semitic stance.

Although the "otherization" of Israel is well under way, it's not too late to course correct.

and its treatment of them before this latest rightward lurch was not good.

That can not be denied. There is valid reason for criticism there as Palestinian villages and groves are constantly being bulldozed.

That's International Law that the US, UK, EU, Russia, and UN agreed to. The Palestinians under Arafat agreed to those terms. Over 95% of all Palestinians live in areas A & B. So what applies in area C applies to maybe 3-4% of Palestinians in the W.Bank.

Unauthorized building in any part of the world is usually countered by bulldozing.

Avidgor Lieberman's mobilization of right-wing MKs for such a contemptible cause – cutting off modest assistance to children in need – sets a new record for the government’s dehumanization of the asylum seekers.

Haaretz Editorial Aug 15, 2016

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman may be taking his time about liquidating Hamas’ Ismail Haniyeh and bringing about the collapse of Hamas in the Gaza Strip – just some of the things he promised to do if he ever got back into the government – but when it comes to other enemies, he’s undaunted. These enemies are the children of asylum seekers: Youngsters from infants to six-year-olds, who are held in so-called “child warehouses” in south Tel Aviv – makeshift day care facilities in which 15 children have died over the past five years due to the atrocious conditions.

Lieberman has instructed Chief of General Staff Gadi Eisenkot to cancel the volunteer activities that some soldiers were involved in, consisting mainly of playing with these children in south Tel Aviv’s public parks. He was responding to heavy pressure exerted on various MKs and ministers by those who oppose the asylum seekers’ presence in south Tel Aviv. The soldiers’ activities, which included taking the children out of those suffocating “warehouses” for two to three hours, were described by Lieberman’s office as being “activities about which there’s a public dispute … especially when in this case it involves activities with a population that isn’t residing here lawfully.”

Aside from the fact that this population “that isn’t residing here lawfully,” as Lieberman’s office put it, includes people that cannot be deported because of the non-refoulement principle, which forbids deporting someone to a country where his life or liberty would be at risk, Lieberman’s decision reflects an incomprehensible insensitivity. Even if their parents’ status is controversial – and it’s controversial only because the state is evading a solution – taking this out on helpless children growing up in sub-standard conditions borders on evil.

The reason given by Lieberman is similar to the answer provided by his deputy, Eli Ben-Dahan, who had earlier also asked Eisenkot to stop the initiative. “It’s more appropriate that Israel Defense Forces soldiers act according to the concept of ‘the poor of your city take precedence,’ and help out Holocaust survivors, the needy and the elderly,” Lieberman said.

The defense minister’s decision, and the mobilization of right-wing MKs for such a contemptible cause – cutting off modest assistance to children in need – sets a new record for the government’s dehumanization of the asylum seekers. It’s also a new record for racism, abominable morals and cruelty.

I personally believe that Dershowitz hasn't made a logically valid argument since at least 1994. I read his "The Abuse Excuse: And Other Cop-outs, Sob Stories, and Evasions of Responsibility" back in the day, which has made me believe that he's been 100% fallacious ever since.

Or doesn't want to. Has he read BLM's platform? It's some good things in it with a whole lot of Radical Leftist crap thrown in. The anti-Israelism is just one of many bad things that the BLM platform calls for. What we are seeing is just one more instance of Leftists co-opting a cause to advance an unrelated and unnecessary radical agenda. As long as Leftist radicals are driving the bus, then anti-Israel, anti-Zionism, and antisemitism are going to be passengers. If you want to boot the passenger, you first have to boot the driver.

21. More words on Dersh.
Tue Aug 16, 2016, 03:21 PM

I post this because it makes an important point about Black Lives Matter. This is from Thomas Harrington in Counter Punch:

"Those of us that support Black Lives Matter are not particularly interested in anything that he—a serial bully, sycophant to the rich and famous and arch-apologist for Israel’s long and constant history of ethnic cleansing—says to us.

Indeed, many us of find the pose he adopts, the all-too-familiar one of the Zionist—which is to say a person beholden to an ideology that grants civil rights on the basis of a person’s bloodlines—telling us what we can and cannot say about this or that subject to be not only offensive, but borderline comical."

Of course I don't agree with any of this. What he writes here that isn't idiocy is outright lies. But he makes the point that Dershowitz is foolish to tell BLM that they should drop the anti-Israel agenda. Because that agenda is woven into everything that these people believe. It isn't the case that Leftists sometime say things that on their face appear to be antisemitic. It is that Leftism is inherently antisemitic. Everyone who is familiar with the canary in the coal mine analogy of Jewish existence should be very concerned about that. Because these people won't just hurt Jews.
