Peres thanks Canada for cutting ties with Iran

In special statement, Peres says Ottawa has proven once again 'that morals come before pragmatism'

President Shimon Peres issued a special statement on Saturday thanking the Canadian people and its leader for cutting diplomatic ties with Iran. He expressed hope that other nations will "see Canada as a moral role model" and follow in its footsteps.

"Canada has proven once again that morals come before pragmatism," the statement said. "Canada has demonstrated that policy must reflect principles and values… Iran is a source of global terror, a blatant violator of human rights and Iran aims to dominate the entire Middle East.

I think the Canadian center/left parties have some good points:

The New Democratic Party:

New Democratic Party Foreign Affairs critic Paul Dewar said he was disappointed in Canada's "retreat" from diplomacy with Iran.

The Ottawa Centre MP said the rationale for the embassy closure offered by Foreign Affairs minister John Baird was "scattered" and did not provide solid evidence that there was a clear threat to Canadian diplomatic safety.

Liberal Party

Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae also frowned on the move, arguing that differences of opinion cannot be the only reason to sever lines of political communication.

“The simple fact is we don’t cut off diplomatic relations with every country we disagree with,” he told CTV News.

Smartest move he's done all of his second term - cut off relations with a theocratic, oppressive Islamist dictatorship.
