http://www.businessinsider.com/netanyahu-israel-right-wing-alliance-2012-10Netanyahu is vying for his third term as premier.
On Thursday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's announced he was merging his Likud party with that of his ultra nationalist coalition ally Foreign Minister Avigdor Liebermanith to create a "big, cohesive force" ahead of Israel's January 22 elections.
The fallout has been heavy and swift from multiple sides.
From Ari Shavit of the left-leaning Israeli newspaper Haaretz:
The right's big bang is undoubtedly a dark development. It turns Israel's ruling liberal nationalist party into an extreme nationalist party. It turns Israel's center-right prime minister into a prime minister held captive by dark forces. If until yesterday, Netanyahu could still claim to be the Israeli Ronald Reagan or Rudy Giuliani, yesterday, he turned into Glenn Beck.

(40,218 posts)It was Yoni Netanyahu, the leader of the commando raid on Entebbe and who was killed there, that was the family star and the one destined for greatness. Bibi road into politics on the coattails of his brother's heroism. If Yoni had lived, Bibi would probably be selling insurance or aluminum siding somewhere.

I just hope that this will lead to some Israelis who are conservatives, but not racists, rejecting the Likud.

The Wikipedia entry on Moshe Feiglin states that in 2007 he got 23.4% of the vote. Of course, Wikipedia could be wrong, though they say they're quoting a Jerusalem post entry. But the more recent primary gave a similar outcome, as quoted in the Israeli press.
What figure do you have?

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won the Likud leadership primary on Tuesday, as expected, taking in 77 percent of the vote. The country's political mood is leaning his way and the polls say he will be elected to lead Israel for another term. But Netanyahu's achievement is clouded by the 23-percent showing by his rival, Moshe Feiglin.
Feiglin didn't expect to win the primary and succeed Netanyahu as the ruling party's leader. His goals are different. He wants to mobilize Likud to carry out the extreme right's ideology - expanding the settlements, preserving the outposts and thwarting a peace agreement with the Palestinians based on a division of the land into two states. The fear that Feiglin would get stronger made Netanyahu swerve to the right and look for ways to keep the lawbreakers in Migron and other illegal outposts on land stolen from Palestinians.
