Obama wins election, takes Jewish vote with him

With initial exit polls showing 70 percent of the Jewish vote going to Obama, all the efforts to swing the Jewish vote in favor of Mitt Romney by wealthy Republicans, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the iVoteIsrael campaign appear to have failed. Even in key swing state Florida, where Romney reportedly received 34 percent of the Jewish vote, Obama still came out on top.

Outside of Florida, the Jewish vote is completely irrelevant, and even inside Florida it is far less important than the Cuban vote, for example.

Politicians actively court Jewish groups for money, not votes. But suggestions of "Jewish money" are always problematic so instead we always hear about politicians courting "the Jewish vote" instead.

American Jews are minnows in an electoral sense - maybe 2-3% of the total electorate. But they are titans in a fundraising sense. Most estimates are that the Democratic Party receives between one-third and two-thirds of its contributions from Jewish donors.

And although Jewish voters aren't that large a percentage of the electorate, they're key in Florida and a few other states.
